Indian Psychiatric Society, Assam State Branch was founded in 1973 in the Gauhati Medical College with Late Dr. (Padmashree) Nani C Bordoloi as President and Late Dr. (Mrs.) Dipali Dutta as Hony. General Secretary. Then the name of the society was 'Assam Psychiatric Society'. (The society was formed on the sidelines of an Eastern Zonal Conference of Indian Psychiatric Society being held at Guwahati).
The society was registered under Society Registration Act vide no. 705 of 1979-80 dated 19th Jan 1980. The affiliation as a state branch was received from Indian Psychiatric Society on 8th April 1989. The name of the body was later changed to "Assam State Branch - Indian Psychiatric Society" (IPSASB) as decided in the AGB meeting held during the IX-th Conference in Guwahati on 13th May, 1990.
